Letting your emotions surface

When I was younger I spent hours looking up quotes. I would put on the type of music that hits you in your soul, drink coffee and just immerse myself in the words and the lyrics surrounding me. Sometimes these moments were sad and it was more about feeling everything all at once so I could move on. Other times it was joyful and I couldn’t help but sing along. These moments were so intense because I let the words hit me. I let every emotion show it’s face and I always came out of these moments feeling lighter and stronger. As an adult, I’ve had less of these moments.

It’s easier to just push out the emotions than to feel them. We can find a distraction anywhere now and it allows us to run rather than face the hard moments. There always seems to be an out, but sometimes I think it’s better to battle these feelings than keep them trapped. I miss seeing a quote that speaks to me and just letting the thoughts flow. The caffeine acted as a catalyst, while the music slowed me down. The perfect balance to ride the wave of emotions that life brings.

When was the last time you spent time alone with your thoughts? Did you let your mind fully explore the emotions that are often hiding? If it’s been awhile, I encourage you to just let it go. Put on some music and process the things you haven’t worked through in awhile. It might be hard, but sometime it can turn the sad tears into tears of relief. It’s not a sign of weakness, it actually makes you powerful and in control of your own mind.

Maybe you’re a quote person too. I went through some I’ve saved over the years and wanted to share them with you:

On struggling:
“Promise me you will not spend so much time treading water and trying to keep your head above the waves that you forget, truly forget, how much you have always loved to swim.”- Tyler Knott Gregson

On strength:
“I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m going. Are you coming with me?”

On work:
“Your profession is not what brings home your weekly paycheck, your profession is what you’re put here one earth to do, with such passion and such intensity that it becomes spiritual in calling.”- Vincent Van Gogh

On mindset:
“Live the full life of the mind, exhilarated by new ideas, intoxicated by the romance of the unusual.”- Ernest Hemingway

On independence:
“She wasn’t looking for a knight, she was looking for a sword.”- Atticus
