Porches are a big deal in the South. They are the epicenter of family gatherings, morning coffee, and late night soul searching. They are a way to appreciate the beauty our warm weather brings.
There is one porch that supports more stories than most and it belongs to Sneaky Beans in Jackson, Mississippi.
I began visiting this porch is high school. I was new to Mississippi and found a group of friends with an adventurous spirit. They introduced me to the coffee shop and it quickly became one of my favorite hideouts.
The shop is actually an old house and is divided up into different rooms. Each room has its own personality. The front offer a place to socialize and the back are filled with locals studying or reading a new novel. There is so much character in this place and the quirkiness does not go unnoticed.
As most baristas do, the staff seems to know everyone who walks through the doors and treat them like they’re the most important person to enter. The customers are great for conversation as well. I once met a friend for coffee and ended up backstage at a Wailers concert through conversations had within the cafe’s doors.
Sneaky Beans also offers a fantastic selection of beer and happy hour prices to be rivalled. These drinks usually make their way out to the porch and offer an inviting presence to passerby.
The shop hosts local musicians throughout the year and is a central gathering spot during community events. It is a great place to relax and immerse yourself in the Fondren area. Although I don’t get out there nearly as much as I’d like, it is a go-to when showing visitors around town.
This place is just about as local as you can get and they support a community of makers in a state that can sometimes be hard on such ideas. They offer local business cards, bumper stickers and art work to promote the diversity of the town.
Don’t just take my word for it- go visit! I promise you will leave with a fantastic cup of coffee and story to tell.
